Happy 17th Birthday Bethany!!!

  • You are about 5'2" but really you're like 5'1.5"! Small but mighty!
  • You finished your junior year of high school and are entering your SENIOR YEAR!!! You had a very challenging academic course load but you soared and earned your AP Capstone diploma.
  • You were part of a lot of clubs including one that you started called Kards for Kids that makes cards for kids in the hospital. You are also part of the SAIL program, AP Capstone, Mu Alpha Theta, Tri M, Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, ASL Honor Society, and Next Gen.
  • You were section leader this year for band and had a solo in the marching show. You earned a superior at district and state solo and ensemble and another superior for a duet at district solo ensemble. You made 2nd chair all county. 
  • You continued to be a part of the Teen Outreach Committee with St. Andrew Bay Estuary.
  • You were selected as one of your school's two nominees for Sunshine State Scholar which recognized the top students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. 
  • We went on college tours this year and you have selected three schools to apply to and plan to major in mechanical engineering. Visiting the engineering departments at each school led you through a process from environmental to civil to mechanical. You have been working hard on your college application materials and we're excited to see where God leads you!
  • You are very involved in church, youth group, and volunteering- your heart for God and others is beautiful!
  • A big challenge you overcame this year was getting your driver's license. You did not like driving at all but have really conquered the fear and are loving the independence you have gained. You are now the proud owner of a Toyota Corolla! :)
  • You joined a pen pal club this year and have pen pals all over the US and even out of the country- you get really excited to check the mail each day!
  • You have such great friends which means either you are usually out somewhere hanging out or our house is filled with giggles and screaming which we absolutely love!
  • Things you love: Chick fil a, watermelon, Kpop, Broadway musicals, anything arts and crafts, playing Mafia, and you're always up for an adventure.
I can hardly believe you're in your Senior year and that this time next year you'll be headed to college! What a joy you are- quiet until people get to know you, thoughtful, peacemaking, introverted but social, artistic, musical, easygoing, smart, hardworking, and just a loving human being! It is clear that God is working in and through you- anyone lucky enough to call you friend knows what a gift they have in you. We are so thankful for the gift of being your family and can't wait to see where this year takes you!! Happy Birthday sweet girl!!

It's a Boy!!!!!

We knew all weeked that the new list was coming out on Monday night. I got more and more nervous as we got closer. By Tuesday morning, I was popping the pepto bismal chewables-heartburn which I have only had one other time (at the end of my pregnancy). There was no guarantee we would even receive a referral off the list, but we were hopeful. Tuesday morning I took Bethany to church for mother's morning out, nervously bought soap and 75% of Valentine's conversaion hearts at Target, and then I went to Panera and got a fruit punch. I set up my laptop, put my phone on the table, and nervously surfed the web until I couldn't handle it anymore. The wait was getting to me. "You're his parents. You're my parents too."

Early yesterday morning Bethany said, "You're his parents. You're my parents too." This about sums up our life now. Trying to figure out how to do that and do it well, while coping with jet lag. Our last night, spent in Hong Kong was nice. We saddled Caleb up in the Ergo and headed out on the subway to downtown Hong Kong. We wondered around for a few hours and Caleb didn't make a peep- he was mesmerized! Our last meal was pizza from and Indian woman at a pier in Hong Kong. Go figure! Our flights home went really well. Caleb had only one fairly short screaming fit on the 15 hour flight from Hong Kong to Detroit. Not bad! The rest of the flight, he was great! The only really difficult part was immigrations in Detroit. All in all it took close to an hour and a half to make it through all the steps. Caleb screamed for about an hour of it. We couldn't find hot water to make a bottle. People were staring at us like we were a freak show. The man behind us may...

It's a boy....a crying boy!

As soon as I got done post the last post, our phone rang. Go time!   We could hear him crying as we came off the elevator. He took one look at us and started to wail. He cried almost the entire time we were with him and had a horrified look on his face. He took the stickers we brought  but wanted no part of the toys we had. We didn't dare hold him. Tomorrow there will be no option and we hope that once we say goodbye to his orphanage staff that he will be able to calm down and get to know us.   It is a very good sign that he is so attached and loved by his caregivers. This should mean he will be able to attach well to us. His orphanage direcotr brought us a photo album of pictures (she worte a note in the front for him), a jump drive full of even more pictures, a chinese fan, and a large book about the orphanage. She was so kind.   You'll notice in his pictures, that he has a scraped nose- part of life as a boy I suppose! : )   We appreciate your prayers as we get him...
