Happy 18th Birthday Bethany!!!

  • You are officially an adult and this post will be the last in a series of many wonderful birthday celebration posts!! What a joy to watch you grow into a beautiful young woman!!
  • You graduated high school ranked 9 with a 4.59 GPA!
  • You graduated with an AP Capstone diploma, an American Sign Language Biliteracy Seal, and a Fine Arts Seal. 
  • You were nominated by teachers, and elected by peers into the North Bay Haven Hall of Fame. 
  • You received multiple scholarships including the FL Bright Futures Academic Scholarship for full tuition, and the Bay Building Industries, Society of American Military Engineers, and North Bay Haven Spirit Scholarships. 
  • You were admitted into Auburn Honors with a scholarship, UCF Honors with a scholarship, FSU, and UF. You will be attending UF and majoring in mechanical engineering. 
  • You were section leader again this year for band. You earned a superior at district and state solo and ensemble. You were in all county band. You also got to go to NYC and march in the St. Patrick's Day parade!
  • You decided to form an Odyssey of the Mind team- Mellos in the Moonlight and Mom was your coach, We went all the way to Worlds which was an amazing experience!
  • You were active in our church youth group, went to Oakwood Experience at Blue Lake, and continued to grow in your faith!
  • You are part of a global penpal club and enjoy creating amazing artistic penpal letters and receiving mail from all over the world!
  • We lost Grandaddy this year which was incredibly sad; you are thankful for the years of great memories with him. 
  • You had your first job beyond babysitting/petsitting. You worked at the Science and Discovery Center's summer camp and it was a perfect first job!
  • You have so many amazing friends and we have loved that our home is so often filled with laughter and friendship!! I know you will do your best to maintain strong connections as you move to college.
  • You like geocaching, penpaling, Kpop, broadway musicals, travel, crafts, playing mafia, escape rooms, lego, mini brands, chick fil a, watermelon, capri suns, reading, listening to music, ladybugs, swimming, and going on adventures!
What a joy it has been to parent you the past 18 years! As you become an official adult, our relationship will change but I am thankful that we have many more adventures ahead! We're proud of you just because of who you are. No accomplishment, failure, success, bump in the road, trophy, degree, or anything else can change our love for you. The achievements are the outward things that we celebrate but it's really who you are at the core that we celebrate the most- and you are a peacemaking, accepting, always room for one more, loving, artistic, giving, humble, woman of faith. We are so excited to watch you go on this grad new adventure and we will be here cheering you on!!!

It's a Boy!!!!!

We knew all weeked that the new list was coming out on Monday night. I got more and more nervous as we got closer. By Tuesday morning, I was popping the pepto bismal chewables-heartburn which I have only had one other time (at the end of my pregnancy). There was no guarantee we would even receive a referral off the list, but we were hopeful. Tuesday morning I took Bethany to church for mother's morning out, nervously bought soap and 75% of Valentine's conversaion hearts at Target, and then I went to Panera and got a fruit punch. "You're his parents. You're my parents too."

Early yesterday morning Bethany said, "You're his parents. You're my parents too." This about sums up our life now. Trying to figure out how to do that and do it well, while coping with jet lag. Our last night, spent in Hong Kong was nice. We saddled Caleb up in the Ergo and headed out on the subway to downtown Hong Kong. We wondered around for a few hours and Caleb didn't make a peep- he was mesmerized! Our last meal was pizza from and Indian woman at a pier in Hong Kong. Go figure! Our flights home went really well. Caleb had only one fairly short screaming fit on the 15 hour flight from Hong Kong to Detroit. Not bad! The rest of the flight, he was great! The only really difficult part was immigrations in Detroit. All in all it took close to an hour and a half to make it through all the steps. Caleb screamed for about an hour of it. Created for Care

Created for Care  is an amazing organization that I discovered just a month or so ago. Their main mission is to care for women who have adopted, fostered children, or are in the process. I was given the amazing blessing of attending their March retreat in Georgia last weekend and I was blown away!! I didn't know anyone. I had read one gal's blog (so fun to meet her in real life) but other than that, I was just on my own. I was a bit rusty on the ol' social scene the first night but quickly met some amazing women and felt right at home. I can't tell you what it feels like to sit next to not just one but multiple women who have sons, adopted from China, with cleft lip/palate. It's like you don't even have to say anything, they just know.... And not just the China Mommas, the sense of togetherness at the retreat was amazing with all the women.
