The one about houses and spouses
How finding a house is like finding a spouse:
1. There are many to choose from but few that seem livable.
2. You just want a place to call home.
3. You can't help but imagine your kids running around. Is it kid friendly?
4. Sometimes you like it instantly but when you take a closer look, it's just not the right one.
5. Some give you too much space, some not enough.
6. Sometimes you make an offer and get rejected.
7. Sometimes an internet search can be very helpful.
8. Sometimes you go back to tour a house you've already considered just to make sure.
9. A solid foundation on high ground means a lot.
10. A Realtor/Builder knows your needs and wants and can help you find/build the perfect house.
We are trying so hard to find the right house for us. And I really can't help but compare it to finding a spouse. It's quite funny to me how similar it is, although not anywhere close to the same emotional investment. One of the first houses I found, I fell in love with instantly. It was charming, beautiful, old-fashioned, with a huge backyard to play in. I loved it! But, alas, it will not stand up to hurricanes. It may be cute, but it won't be there if the storm gets too bad. So, it was quickly taken out of the running. And that's ok with me. Because, just like my choice in spouse, I want a house that has a solid foundation and can weather the storms.
We're now considering starting from scratch and building a house. Kind of a pain if you ask me. But Tom keeps reminding me that if we build it ourselves we'll get exactly what we want.
So as I continue on the roller coaster of rejected bids, houses that look perfect but aren't safe, and the challenge, er, I mean adventure of building a house from scratch I will remember how God lovingly brought Tom into my life. It took us both some heartache and a lot of searching to get to each other. But in the end I know our family has a solid foundation on high ground and it certainly feels like home.
