The abridged version- Adenoid Surgery Day
All times are approximate. ; )
6:05 AM- Bethany woke up happy. I woke up nervous and not well rested. Tom woke up normal. :)
6:30 AM- Bethany started asking for a drink.
6:35 AM- Bethany completely melted down about not being able to eat or drink.
6:37 AM- Tantrum over- Phew!7:30 AM- Everyone dressed and ready to go, including, New "Night Night"(stuffed elephant), Old "Night Night", and Doggie. In a show of solidarity, Daddy didn't eat or drink either. I on the other hand had a great breakfast by myself in a room where B could not see.
7:45 AM- Arrived at surgery center early. Checked in. Given a pager just like you get a restaurants-weird, but helpful.
7:50 AM- Bethany found the snack cup of goldfish crackers she left the other day during pre op. No eating or drinking, remember? Dang it! Another meltdown. Daddy walked her outside and then it was ok
8:01 AM- Back to pre op. Dressed in "Princess Gown" AKA the hospital gown. Coloring happily but not so sure about surroundings or the people that keep coming to talk to her.
8:15 AM- Her doctor's husband was the anesthesiologist. He moves towards Bethy she moves away. "Looks like we'll need some calming medicine."
8:30 AM- Pink medicine looks exciting, tastes icky. Mom and Dad win the battle and 75% of the pink stuff makes it in. Minutes later, I see Bethy visibly relax.
8:35 AM- Bethy builds a princess castle out of crayons and markers in Daddy's hands. She says there are a lot of people in the castle. She also tries multiple times to write with her left hand- she's right handed.
8:55 AM- Bethy goes with the nurse without a fight.
9:00 AM- Adenoids are outta there!
9:20 AM- Surgery is done and doctor reports that her adenoids are actually much worse than we thought and that they were causing a 60% blockage. This is good news because that means a better chance that having them out will make a great difference! Woo hoo!
9:35 AM- We go back to recovery to a crying, hoarse sounding, mad Bethy. She was doing some weird bobbing thing with her head. Poor baby. IV out, Nana came back. Bethy calmed down.
10AM- Headed out. On the way out she saw a picture of the beach and said, "I been there." and I knew all was right in her world again. She also got flowers from Grandaddy and a big Tinkerbell Balloon from Nana and Grandaddy. Grandma and Grandpa have a card on the way and she has a card in the mail from a friend too. Plus, she got to watch Beauty in the Beast (a present from Mommy and Daddy) when she got home. Woo hoo!
Since we've been home, she's eaten well, including a Popsicle, applesauce, and some jello. She's got some good drugs in her now and is asleep. We'll be sticking it out at home for 5 days.
